[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Eight additional confirmed COVID-19 cases have been identified among the Cheonghae Unit, which is currently in quarantine due to a cluster infection of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).


On the 29th, the Ministry of National Defense announced that 8 more cases were confirmed in the 36th Cheonghae Unit (Choi Youngham), increasing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases from 27 to 35 out of 304 personnel.


Among the 8 newly confirmed cases, 2 individuals are experiencing mild sore throat and fever, and runny nose symptoms respectively, while the remaining 6 are asymptomatic with normal body temperature, according to the Ministry of National Defense.


They are scheduled to receive isolation treatment at a local hotel and medical facilities in Oman, where they are currently staying.


The Cheonghae Unit confirmed the cluster infection in Oman, their stationed country, on the 27th, and has since quarantined all personnel except essential staff at a local hotel.


Meanwhile, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases within the military increased by 141.


The additional confirmed cases mainly occurred in the Army (83) and Air Force (37), with cases also reported in the directly controlled units (12), Marine Corps (6), and Navy (3).


Among the new confirmed cases, 31 were identified in two units within the Air Force Education Command in Jinju, Gyeongnam.


One of these units is the Basic Military Training Group of the Education Command, where the first confirmed case was reported on the 18th; 14 additional cases were confirmed on this day, bringing the total to 64. The remaining 17 cases occurred in other units within the Education Command.


As of this date, the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the military stands at 4,519, with 764 cases currently under management.
