[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyeyoung] LG Electronics announced on the 28th that it has carried out social contribution activities to help neighbors in need in local communities in celebration of the Lunar New Year holiday.

LG Electronics recently conducted donation activities to support vulnerable groups, small business owners, and youth preparing for independence in areas where its major business sites are located, including Gangseo-gu in Seoul, Pyeongtaek-si in Gyeonggi-do, Changwon-si in Gyeongsangnam-do, and Gumi-si in Gyeongsangbuk-do.

LG Electronics donated food kits to approximately 500 vulnerable households (based on a family of four) in these regions for three days. Notably, these kits were purchased from local self-employed restaurants in the area that have been struggling due to COVID-19, thereby contributing to coexistence with local small business owners.

In addition, LG Electronics donated over 100 daily necessities kits to youth preparing for independence who have aged out of care after living in childcare facilities or foster homes upon turning 18.

This donation activity was funded by donations collected through the ‘Donation Meal’ program participated in by LG Electronics employees and social contribution funds voluntarily donated by executives.

The Donation Meal program is an employee participation initiative that LG Electronics has been conducting at all domestic business sites since 2011. It involves charging the regular meal price in the employee cafeteria while reducing side dishes to lower costs, with the saved amount being converted into donation funds. These funds are used annually for social contribution activities.

The executive social contribution fund, started in 2004, is accumulated by executives voluntarily deducting a certain amount from their monthly salaries and is used every year for various social contribution activities both domestically and internationally.

Yoon Daesik, Executive Vice President in charge of External Cooperation at LG Electronics, said, “Through this donation activity, we hope to provide some help to neighbors in need, including small business owners struggling due to COVID-19, vulnerable groups, and youth preparing for independence, so they can have a warm Lunar New Year holiday. We will continue to fulfill our corporate social responsibility to create a better local community.”
