[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Major foreign media reported on the 26th (local time) that the scale of money laundering using virtual currency increased by 30% compared to 2020.
According to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, the scale of money laundering using virtual currency last year was estimated at $8.6 billion (approximately 10.34 trillion KRW). This was the highest since Chainalysis began compiling the statistics in 2017. The cumulative amount of laundered funds has exceeded $33 billion.
Chainalysis explained that considering the sharp increase in virtual currency transactions regardless of their legality last year, the surge in money laundering is not surprising.
