[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A man in his 20s who confined and repeatedly assaulted his girlfriend was sentenced to prison.
The Changwon District Court Criminal Division 5 (Judge Kwak Hee-du) announced on the 26th that it sentenced Mr. A (29), who was tried on charges including injury, to 1 year and 6 months in prison.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "Considering the method of the crime and the extent of the damage, the nature of the crime is serious," and "The victim appears to have suffered considerable pain due to the repeated offenses."
Mr. A is accused of indiscriminately assaulting and threatening his girlfriend at her home in Changwon City, Gyeongnam, on July 20 last year, saying, "Why don’t you buy me clothes? Others buy me meals, so why don’t you buy me meals?" He also took away his girlfriend’s cellphone when she tried to escape and prevented her from leaving the house by keeping her away from the front door.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A habitually assaulted and threatened his girlfriend, suspecting her of seeing other men, including breaking her cellphone and threatening her with a weapon.
