[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] Lotte Chemical, Samsung Engineering, and POSCO are launching a clean hydrogen business development project in Malaysia.

Lotte Chemical, Samsung Engineering, POSCO, and Malaysia SEDC Energy announced on the 26th that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the 'Malaysia Sarawak Clean Hydrogen Project (H2biscus) Development.'

The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Yeon-seop, Head of ESG Management Division at Lotte Chemical; Park Cheon-hong, Head of Solution Business Division at Samsung Engineering; Cho Joo-ik, Head of Hydrogen Business Office at POSCO; and Abdul Aziz bin Hussain, Chairman of SEDC.

They plan to construct plants in the Sarawak region of Malaysia with an annual capacity of 630,000 tons of green ammonia, 600,000 tons of blue ammonia, 460,000 tons of green methanol, and 7,000 tons of green hydrogen. A feasibility study covering technology, legal, financial, tax, and market analysis will be conducted within this month. Lotte Chemical, Samsung Engineering, and POSCO have been promoting overseas hydrogen project development since signing an MOU for hydrogen business development last October.

Among the produced products, 7,000 tons of green hydrogen will be used locally, while all clean ammonia and clean methanol will be imported to Korea for use by domestic companies.

Kim Yeon-seop, Head of ESG Management Division at Lotte Chemical, said, "We are pleased to proceed with this project through cooperation with companies possessing top expertise in each field," adding, "Lotte Chemical will take the lead in revitalizing Korea's hydrogen economy and creating an eco-friendly ecosystem based on global business know-how accumulated in 22 countries worldwide, including Malaysia, and efficient production capabilities developed through operating 26 production bases."

Park Cheon-hong, Head of Solution Business Division at Samsung Engineering, stated, "We will drive the success of this project based on the solid local network established through the ongoing Sarawak methanol plant project," and added, "We will strengthen our position as a 'Green Solution Provider' through strategic alliances and technology acquisition in the hydrogen and carbon neutrality sectors."

Cho Joo-ik, Head of Hydrogen Business Office at POSCO, said, "POSCO is currently participating in numerous global hydrogen production projects, building its capabilities in the hydrogen business," and added, "Since the Sarawak region is expected to be a key area for clean hydrogen production, we will strive to successfully carry out this cooperation to introduce clean hydrogen domestically and transition to a hydrogen society."
