Due to climate change, abnormal weather phenomena such as heatwaves, heavy snowfall, typhoons, and wildfires are occurring around the world. As a result, more than 120 countries are participating in an international alliance pursuing 'carbon zero,' and South Korea has also declared 'carbon neutrality' by 2050, joining efforts to overcome the climate change crisis.
In response, the technology-based social venture Afterrain has installed four AI garden management systems in Gumi that can realize carbon neutrality and ESG. The Afterrain AI garden management system is an urban green space AIoT automatic management system, a key to carbon reduction such as the Smart Garden project led by the Korea Forest Service, which can quickly and extensively expand urban green spaces.
This system not only measures the surrounding environment of urban green spaces, such as temperature and humidity, but also continuously analyzes the actual condition of plants using AIoT artificial intelligence technology (bio-impedance and image recognition technology), providing a smart management system that finds the optimal growth conditions under any indoor or outdoor environment.
When this system is applied to existing urban green spaces, it is known to reduce the number of visits by landscape managers, which account for most of the maintenance costs, from 24 times a year to 6 times a year, and also reduce the amount of plants that need to be replaced from 15% to 5%. Another great advantage is that urban green spaces installed in different locations can be managed integrally at once.
Afterrain aims to install AI garden management systems in 317 urban green spaces, including the Korea Forest Service’s Smart Garden project, this year. Afterrain expects that if the AI garden management system reduces the burden of urban green space management costs, more urban green spaces will be created, serving as a stepping stone for achieving carbon neutrality and ESG.
