[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) announced on the 25th that its President Son Hyuk-sang has been elected as co-chair of the international consortium ‘HGV’ (Halving Global Violence), which aims to reduce all violence on Earth by half by 2030.

HGV was established in 2020 under the leadership of the ‘Pathfinders’ coalition, which consists of 39 entities including governments, civil society organizations, international organizations, and corporations.

It pursues the achievement of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, including the reduction of violence, which is the 16th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United Nations.

Composed of senior officials from major international development cooperation agencies and current and former ministers from various countries, it plays a role in urging the international community to pay attention to violence issues.

The Pathfinders stated, “Five co-chairs were elected, including ministers from key departments of Costa Rica, Liberia, and South Africa, the head of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and the head of Korea’s KOICA. We expect that adding Korea’s leadership and expertise to the international efforts to solve global violence issues will give more momentum to HGV activities.”

President Son will serve as co-chair of HGV until 2023, leading efforts such as preparing strategic reports on violence reduction.

President Son said, “KOICA will strive for effective efforts to reduce violence, including expanding the cooperation base among Pathfinders and HGV participating countries and institutions, which are actively engaged in peace, inclusion, and violence prevention.”
