52nd 'Sohwakhaeng' Pledge Announcement
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on the 25th that he will make it mandatory to recognize 'military service seniority' when calculating pay grades and wages. He also promised to shorten the training period for mobilized reservists and significantly increase the compensation.
On that day, Lee posted on Facebook, "I felt regretful that our society still seems to take lightly the time spent on mandatory military service," and announced his 52nd 'small but certain happiness' pledge containing these details.
Lee said, "We will respect military service and the country's defense service, and the state should rightfully compensate for it," adding, "We will make it mandatory to recognize 'military service seniority' when calculating pay grades and wages." He pointed out, "Currently, it is only a legal recommendation, and 60% of some public enterprises and private companies do not recognize it."
In addition, he said the training period for mobilized reservists will be shortened from 4 years to 3 years, and the training compensation will be raised to 200,000 won per day.
Lee emphasized, "Mobilized reservists suspend their livelihoods to enter training camps and undergo training. However, the training compensation is 63,000 won for 2 nights and 3 days, which is far below the minimum wage," and added, "We will double the amount from the Democratic Party's pledge during the last general election and pay 200,000 won per day."
He continued, "I have always said that special sacrifices require special compensation," and said, "We will create a government that fairly compensates the time sacrificed to protect the nation."
