Samsung Heavy Industries Develops Ship Carbon Capture Technology... Obtains KR Basic Certification

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Samsung Heavy Industries has succeeded in developing an 'On board Carbon Capture' system applicable to LNG fuel-powered ships in collaboration with Panasia, a domestic eco-friendly equipment specialist company.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 25th that it has obtained the basic certification for the 'On board Carbon Capture' system from the Korean Register (KR), the first of its kind in Korea.

This certified technology is an eco-friendly method that uses an amine-based liquid absorbent to separate and recover carbon dioxide from the exhaust gas of LNG combusted in ship engines or generators. Samsung Heavy Industries and Panasia have recognized the need for additional carbon reduction technologies to achieve carbon neutrality in the mid to long term, despite LNG fuel being spotlighted as an eco-friendly fuel in the shipbuilding and shipping industry, and have been jointly developing this technology since 2020.

Samsung Heavy Industries plans to commercialize carbon capture technology optimized for LNG-powered ships by 2024 through continuous research to enhance carbon capture performance and technical reliability.

Samsung Heavy Industries is currently conducting technology performance tests using the carbon capture demonstration facility established by Panasia in Jinhae, Gyeongnam, and is expanding business cooperation to secure eco-friendly technologies, including signing a service contract last year with BASF, the world's largest integrated chemical company based in Germany, for carbon capture process technology (OASE® blue).

Park Geon-il, head of Samsung Heavy Industries' Eco-friendly Research Center, stated, "The combination of LNG propulsion technology and carbon capture technology is expected to be a practical eco-friendly solution to the IMO's progressively strengthening carbon emission regulations through 2050," adding, "This will not only help achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets but also continue to drive demand for LNG ships."
