LG Chem Supplies Novarezine, Eco-Friendly Coating Material
LG Chem employees are posing to commemorate the first export shipment of Bio Balanced Neopentyl Glycol (NPG) at the Yeosu plant. [Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] LG Chem announced on the 25th that it will export neopentyl glycol (NPG) made from bio-based raw materials such as waste cooking oil and palm by-products to an Italian company.
NPG is a material used as a raw material for coatings applied to automobiles, home appliances, and beverage cans. This product made by LG Chem from bio-based raw materials has received the global sustainable eco-friendly material certification ISCC Plus, with a carbon reduction effect of over 70% compared to conventional materials. The company quantifies the carbon reduction effect of each product using life cycle assessment (LCA) data, which accounts for all environmental impacts from raw material production to product shipment.
The Italian company Novaresin, which will receive this product, is recognized as a leading sustainable technology company in Europe by increasing the supply of bio-balanced products. Since 2020, LG Chem has been stably sourcing bio-based raw materials from the Finnish biodiesel company Neste. The company plans to shift its business structure toward eco-friendly materials by increasing the number of ISCC Plus certified products to 39.
Noh Guk-rae, head of LG Chem's petrochemical business division, said, "Since we first localized NPG using purely independent technology in 1998, it is highly significant that the NPG product applying bio-based raw materials has taken its first step onto the global stage," adding, "We will lead the eco-friendly materials sector in the global market by cooperating with sustainable innovative companies."
