GS Construction exports hydrogen plant modules to the US... Industry first

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] GS Engineering & Construction is the first domestic construction company to export hydrogen plants as 'modules' to the United States.

GS Engineering & Construction announced on the 24th that it signed a memorandum of understanding with SG H2 Lancaster, an energy company based in the United States, to participate in the design and manufacturing of renewable green hydrogen plant modules. This project involves constructing renewable green hydrogen facilities in Lancaster, California, producing 11 tons of hydrogen per day from 40,000 tons of waste paper annually. This amount is enough to fuel approximately 1,700 medium-sized hydrogen vehicles.

SG H2 Lancaster, the project operator, is a special purpose company (SPC) established by SG H2 Energy to promote the project. GS Engineering & Construction will provide the hydrogen plant modules, which are key components in the EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) phase of the project.

A GS Engineering & Construction official stated, "To reduce investment costs and minimize construction time, we decided to build the hydrogen plant in a modular format. Our expertise in modularization technology in oil refining and gas plants was recognized, leading to this partnership."

Through this project, GS Engineering & Construction plans to standardize the modular design and construction of hydrogen plants. This will enable participation in SG H2 hydrogen plant projects under development across North America, Europe, and Asia, as well as application to clean energy projects utilizing plasma technology currently underway in Ulsan.

Heo Yunhong, Head of New Business Division at GS Engineering & Construction, said, "This project marks our entry into the green hydrogen plant sector, which is expected to grow continuously in the future. We aim to build partnerships with leading companies in the green hydrogen field and anticipate expansion of eco-friendly businesses. Through this project, we will continue sustainable management that considers the environment and society as an ESG-leading company."
