Wiesbaden WtE Plant Contracted... Processes 600 Tons of Municipal Waste Daily to Generate Power
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hye-young] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has secured a Waste to Energy (WtE) plant project worth 160 billion KRW in Germany. Following consecutive orders centered on Poland and Germany, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction plans to gradually expand its presence in the European market.
On the 24th, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction announced that its German subsidiary, Doosan Lentjes, received the Notice to Proceed (NTP) for the Wiesbaden WtE plant from MHKW Wiesbaden. MHKW Wiesbaden is a company established as a joint venture between a German waste management company, the Wiesbaden district heating company, and the Darmstadt regional power company to operate the Wiesbaden WtE plant.
Doosan Lentjes will carry out the project under an EPC contract, overseeing everything from design to equipment supply, installation, and commissioning of the Wiesbaden WtE plant, scheduled for completion in 2024. The Wiesbaden WtE plant will process 600 tons of municipal solid waste per day, generating 22 MW of electricity and supplying 40 MW of district heating.
WtE plants are facilities that convert various combustible waste generated from industrial sites or households into energy through processes such as gasification, incineration, and pyrolysis. This supplies electricity and heat while minimizing landfill waste, thereby reducing environmental pollution. In particular, the European WtE market is seeing increased new orders due to rising demand for replacing aging plants and policies restricting landfill sites.
Park Hong-wook, Head of Power Service BG at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, said, "As environmental standards for waste resources have been strengthened in Europe, the market has steadily expanded with about 10 WtE orders placed annually over the past five years. With approximately 80 new orders expected by 2025, we will actively target the European WtE market based on our existing order achievements."
Doosan Lentjes has been steadily expanding its influence in the European market by securing WtE facilities over the past two years. In August 2020, it won the 126 billion KRW Poland Olsztyn WtE plant project, followed by the 120 billion KRW Germany Dinslaken WtE plant order in October. In May last year, it also secured the 67 billion KRW Poland Warsaw WtE plant project.
