[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken stated on the 23rd (local time) that the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in China is not expected to be a variable in Russia's decision on whether to invade Ukraine.

In an interview with CBS, Secretary Blinken said, "I do not think the timing of the Olympics will influence Russia's decision regarding Ukraine." This was in response to speculations that Russia might avoid taking action during the Olympics to support China.

In an interview with CNN, Blinken also warned, "If even one more Russian soldier enters Ukraine aggressively, it will trigger a swift, severe, and unified response from the U.S. and Europe."

Regarding immediate sanctions against Russia, he mentioned, "The purpose of sanctions is to deter Russia's aggression, and imposing them now would lose their deterrent effect." He refrained from commenting specifically on the UK Foreign Office's announcement that Russia intends to establish a pro-Russian government in Ukraine.

President Joe Biden, staying at his presidential retreat Camp David, held discussions with the national security team on the Ukraine situation the previous day. The White House stated, "President Biden reaffirmed that if Russia attacks Ukraine, the U.S., together with its allies and partners, will impose swift and severe consequences."
