Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop Orders Emergency Support Measures for Apartment Collapse Victims

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, has ordered the preparation of emergency support measures for the victims related to the ‘Hyundai Development Company Apartment Construction Collapse Accident.’

According to Gwangju City on the 23rd, Mayor Lee held a meeting on support measures for the collapse accident victims at the Accident Response Integrated Headquarters the previous afternoon and requested urgent support measures from the city, Seo-gu District, and Hyundai Development Company.

Mayor Lee said, “There are too many people suffering from this accident, including the families of the collapse victims who have put aside their livelihoods to stay at the accident site and watch the search and rescue operations, nearby residents and store merchants who had to evacuate due to the risk of further collapse, and prospective residents whose dream of owning a home has crumbled.” He instructed, “Prepare support measures so that the victims can feel the warmth of sharing and solidarity in Gwangju during the Lunar New Year holiday, which is just a week away, and receive some consolation.”

He continued, “While the final compensation for all damages is an issue that Hyundai Development Company must take responsibility for and lead to resolve once the accident response is completed, we must not neglect citizens who are facing desperate livelihoods right before the holiday.” He emphasized, “Devoting all efforts and sincerity to those suffering is the spirit of Gwangju and the duty of public officials.”

He also demanded the preparation of support measures for subcontractor workers who suffered damages due to the suspension of construction caused by this accident at Hyundai Development Company.

Mayor Lee stated, “Together with the government, we will mobilize all human and material resources to speed up the search and rescue operations for the missing persons and do our best to bring them back to their families as soon as possible.” He added, “On the other hand, we will also carefully consider and actively support the pain and suffering of citizens who have been directly affected or are experiencing difficulties due to this accident, ensuring no negligence in this regard.”
