[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City announced on the 23rd that it has conducted a comprehensive cleanup of over 5,000 illegal banners within the city.
The comprehensive cleanup was carried out to remove guerrilla-style illegal banners installed to promote apartment sales, which have increased recently due to the revitalization of local construction markets such as redevelopment and reconstruction.
Guerrilla-style illegal banners are mainly those installed between Friday evening, when administrative personnel are absent, and early Monday morning.
The problem is that these banners are installed disorderly on traffic lights, street lamps, and roadside trees, not only damaging the city’s aesthetics but also causing traffic accidents and posing threats to pedestrian safety.
Accordingly, on this day, about 50 people, including officials from the five autonomous districts and members of the Daejeon Outdoor Advertising Association, participated in the comprehensive cleanup by removing illegal banners along 18 routes.
The illegal banners collected in one day amounted to the capacity of five 1-ton trucks, totaling over 5,000 banners.
In particular, the city and the five autonomous districts judged that the crackdown on this day alone would not eradicate guerrilla-style illegal banners. Therefore, they plan to conduct surprise weekend cleanups at least once a month and enforce strong administrative measures against illegal banner advertisers and sales-related businesses.
Jung Hae-gyo, Director of the City’s Urban Housing Bureau, said, “We will continue crackdowns without interruption until the installation of illegal banners is completely eradicated. Especially this year, as the year when the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Congress will be held, we will strive to create a clean city image.”
