"Changes in Car Demand" Eco-friendly Car Registrations in Seoul Surge 31%... Total Registrations Up 0.6% Annual Trend of Vehicle Registrations in Seoul (2011 ~ 2021)


[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The cumulative number of registered vehicles in Seoul has increased by 0.61% over the past year to approximately 3.17 million. While hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles have surged by more than 30%, internal combustion engine vehicles have declined, indicating an overall shift in automobile demand toward eco-friendly options.


On the 24th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the results of an analysis of cumulative vehicle registration statistics based on this data. According to the results, the total number of registered vehicles in Seoul last year was 3,176,743, averaging one vehicle per 2.99 residents. Although the number of registered vehicles increased, the growth rate of 0.61% was relatively low compared to the national average of 2.24% across provinces and cities.


The district with the highest number of registered vehicles was Songpa-gu, with 246,858 vehicles, while Jung-gu had the highest vehicle-to-population ratio, with one vehicle per 2.0 residents. The top five districts by number of registered vehicles?Songpa-gu, Gangnam-gu (239,643 vehicles), Gangseo-gu (205,058 vehicles), among others?accounted for 32.13% of all vehicles registered in Seoul. The districts with the highest registration rates relative to population were Jung-gu, followed by Gangnam-gu (44.96%), Seocho-gu (42.96%), Geumcheon-gu (39.07%), and Yeongdeungpo-gu (38.77%).

A notable change is the more than 31% increase in eco-friendly vehicle registrations over the past year. As of the end of last year, hydrogen, electric, and hybrid vehicles totaled 184,898, marking a 31.7% (44,554 vehicles) increase compared to the previous year. By type, hybrid vehicles (141,889), electric vehicles (40,564), and hydrogen vehicles (2,445) surged by 23.1%, 73.4%, and 46.3%, respectively. Conversely, diesel vehicles decreased by 23,546, LPG vehicles by 13,403, and CNG vehicles by 227 compared to the previous year.


By gender, the registration ratio was 63.1% male and 22.1% female, with corporations and business registrations accounting for 14.8%. Registration rates by age and gender showed the highest proportions among males in their 50s (16.76%), 40s (15.96%), and 60s (13.43%), while among females, the highest rates were in their 50s (6.18%), 40s (5.90%), and 60s (4.17%).


Meanwhile, the market share of foreign-made vehicles steadily increased. Foreign vehicles numbered 615,639, up by 46,319 from the previous year, accounting for 19.38% of all vehicles. Foreign vehicle registrations grew by 8.14% over the year and surged 218.5% (422,346 vehicles) compared to ten years ago. The top three districts for foreign vehicle registrations were Gangnam-gu (14.42%), Seocho-gu (9.97%), and Songpa-gu (9.05%), while the districts with the highest foreign vehicle registration rates relative to population were Jung-gu (19.25%), Gangnam-gu (16.65%), and Seocho-gu (14.89%).


Baek Ho, Director of Urban Transportation at Seoul City, stated, “The changes in automobile demand appear to reflect various factors such as shifts in the industrial paradigm and policy support. We will strive to establish a customized transportation system by implementing meticulous vehicle demand management and proactive policies centered on eco-friendly vehicles.”
