[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 23rd that it will conduct intensive crackdowns on traffic law violations, including pedestrian protection violations, until the end of next month to reduce pedestrian traffic accidents.

According to the police, an analysis of pedestrian accident statistics over the past three years showed a tendency for pedestrian accidents to occur frequently in January and February. In particular, 25.5% of pedestrian accidents occurred around intersections and crosswalks.

The police plan to carry out large-scale crackdowns during the intensive enforcement period to prevent accidents caused by driver negligence such as pedestrian protection violations, signal violations, and intersection traffic method violations, as well as pedestrian jaywalking accidents.

First, they will mobilize available field personnel such as traffic police, mobile units, and local police, along with patrol cars and motorcycles. They plan to focus enforcement on pedestrian protection violations, signal violations, intersection traffic method violations (queue jumping), and jaywalking pedestrians at major intersections, crosswalks, and accident-prone locations.

In addition, active publicity will be conducted regarding the traffic methods for right turns at intersections, which drivers often find confusing. A Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency official said, "Small actions such as stopping temporarily in front of crosswalks are the first step to preventing pedestrian accidents," and urged, "Please actively participate in creating a traffic culture where people come before cars."
