[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] A COVID-19 confirmed patient was caught leaving home without permission during the self-quarantine period, citing walking their pet dog as the reason.

On the 22nd, the Eunpyeong Police Station in Seoul announced that on the 21st, they received a complaint from the Eunpyeong-gu Public Health Center and booked a woman in her 60s, Ms. A, on charges of violating the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act. Ms. A is suspected of leaving home without permission every day during the self-quarantine period after being confirmed positive for COVID-19 earlier this month.

Ms. A left her mobile phone at home and went out to walk her pet dog, missing calls from the public health center. The health center made about 30 calls over an hour but failed to reach her and requested police assistance. Police and fire authorities dispatched to Ms. A’s residence and caught her unauthorized outings.

According to the epidemiological investigation by the health center, Ms. A went outside every day for eight days from the day she was confirmed positive until the day her unauthorized outings were detected, citing walking her pet dog as the reason. Additionally, police reported that Ms. A also visited a neighbor’s house.

Violating quarantine measures can result in imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won under the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.
