Samsung Power? "MicroLED Market Expected to Expand from 60 Billion to 5 Trillion Won in 4 Years"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] The micro light-emitting diode (LED) market, which will lead the premium TV market, is expected to grow more than 80 times from 60 billion KRW this year to over 5 trillion KRW by 2026.

On the 22nd, market research firm TrendForce forecasted that the global micro LED market for large displays will grow at an annual rate of 204%, expanding from 54 million USD (approximately 64 billion KRW) this year to about 4.582 billion USD by 2026. TrendForce predicted, "The development of micro LEDs for large displays will peak between 2026 and 2030."

Micro LED refers to LEDs at the micrometer (㎛) scale that emit light and color by themselves without backlights or color filters, currently used in TV displays. Samsung Electronics, the global leader in TV market share, is positioning micro LED TVs as its core premium TV product and has been unveiling new models consecutively.

At a press conference during CES 2022, the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition, on the 6th, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee stated, "Currently, Samsung's ultra-premium TV is micro LED, followed by Neo QLED and QD displays." Regarding concerns about the high price of micro LED products, which approach 100 million KRW and thus reduce marketability, he added, "The cost has dropped to about one-quarter of the 2018 level, and as we expand factories, production volume will also increase."

TrendForce expects that although the micro LED market for large displays is currently growing mainly around TVs, it will expand into home theater and high-end commercial display markets. TrendForce also noted that micro LED technology and costs have yet to meet market expectations, requiring further improvements.

TrendForce evaluated, "For micro LEDs used in large displays, regardless of the transmission technology applied in the future, to meet the conditions for mass commercialization, efficiency must reach at least 20 million units and yield must achieve 99.999%."
