From the 24th to the 2nd of next month, for 10 days
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Police Agency announced that from the 24th of this month to the 2nd of next month, a period of ten days, parking will be allowed for up to two hours on roads surrounding 483 traditional markets nationwide, including Bangsan Market in Seoul, Sanbon Market in Gunpo, and Gang-gyeong Market in Nonsan, to revitalize traditional markets and boost local commercial consumption during the Lunar New Year holiday.
The roads where parking is permitted around traditional markets include 138 locations where year-round parking is allowed, and 345 locations temporarily selected by local governments and the National Police Agency after gathering opinions from market merchant associations and considering road conditions. The permitted sections can be checked on the respective local government websites of the traditional markets.
Aside from the sections where temporary parking is allowed around traditional markets, illegal parking and stopping will be strictly enforced in areas such as school zones, within 5 meters of fire hydrants, street corners at intersections, within 10 meters of bus stops, and crosswalks. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Police Agency plan to strengthen police patrol personnel and deploy parking attendants from local governments and merchant associations on site to prevent disorder and traffic congestion caused by the parking allowance.
Gu Bon-geun, Regional Economic Support Officer, said, “Through allowing parking on roads around traditional markets for the Lunar New Year, we hope local residents will visit the warm and friendly traditional markets more often and prepare for the holiday comfortably. We also expect this to revive the vitality of traditional markets and provide some help to local merchants who are struggling due to COVID-19.”
