Gyeongnam Provincial Election Commission Announces Local Election Costs... Average 151 Million KRW for Mayors and County Governors

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Ju-cheol In] The Gyeongnam Provincial Election Commission announced on the 21st the election expense limits that candidates can use in the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections to be held on June 1.

The election expense limits were introduced to prevent excessive election campaigning and money politics, and to avoid unfairness in election campaigns due to economic disparities among candidates.

The limits are calculated by reflecting inflation rates and population or the number of eup, myeon, and dong for each election. The limit for the governor and superintendent of education elections is 1.713 billion KRW, which is 6 million KRW (0.35%) higher than the 7th local elections.

The proportional representation provincial assembly member election limit remains unchanged at 217 million KRW compared to the 7th local elections. The average limit for heads of basic local governments in the province is about 151 million KRW.

The highest limit is for the Changwon mayoral election at 370 million KRW, and the lowest limits are for the Uiryeong, Namhae, and Sancheong county head elections, each at 114 million KRW.

For local council member elections, the average limit is 49 million KRW for district provincial assembly members, 40 million KRW for district city/county council members, and 47 million KRW for proportional representation city/county council members.

If the election district changes due to redistricting for district provincial assembly or city/county council member elections, the election expense limits will be revised and announced accordingly.
