According to the quarantine authorities and local governments including Seoul, from midnight to 6 PM on this day, a total of 4,552 people tested positive for COVID-19 across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. This is 53 more than the 4,499 cases recorded at the same time the previous day.
Compared to 3,104 cases recorded at the same time a week ago on the 14th, this is 1,448 more, and compared to 2,410 cases two weeks ago on the 7th, it is 2,142 more.
New confirmed cases had been on a declining trend since late last month but have recently turned upward due to the spread of the Omicron variant.
Since there is still time until midnight when the count closes, the number of new confirmed cases to be announced on the 22nd is expected to increase further.
On this day, 2,702 cases (59.4%) were reported in the metropolitan area, and 1,850 cases (40.6%) in non-metropolitan areas. Compared to the previous day (metropolitan area 58.3%, non-metropolitan area 41.7%), the proportion in the metropolitan area slightly increased.
Cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces: Gyeonggi 1,260, Seoul 990, Incheon 452, Daegu 410, Busan 226, Gwangju 221, Gyeongbuk 184, Chungnam 144, Gyeongnam 131, Jeonnam 109, Chungbuk 106, Jeonbuk 95, Daejeon 93, Gangwon 88, Jeju 19, Ulsan 16, and Sejong 8.
Meanwhile, the number of new confirmed cases over the past week from the 15th has been 4,419 → 4,192 → 3,857 → 4,070 → 5,804 → 6,602 → 6,769, averaging about 5,102 cases per day.
