Discussion on Identifying Top Breeds and Establishing Measures Against Diseases and Pests

A meeting was held on the 20th at the Gyeongsan Agricultural Education Center to discover high-quality rice varieties.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Gyeongsan City, Gyeongbuk Province, held a meeting on the 20th to discover the optimal rice varieties suitable for local conditions.

About 10 full-time rice farmers participated in the meeting. Explanations about the highest quality rice varieties and measures to discover high-quality rice varieties suitable for local conditions were discussed.

The city’s government-supplied rice varieties from the previous year were Samgwang, Ilpum, Baekokchal, Haedam, Jinsumi, Yeonghojinmi, and Odae rice, among which Samgwang (8.7t) and Ilpum (7.3t) were supplied the most.

In particular, diseases such as lodging, spikelet blight, and bacterial grain rot occurred in the Samgwang and Ilpum rice cultivation areas last year, resulting in reduced yields.

Because of this, there is a growing demand for varieties to replace Samgwang and Ilpum.

A representative from the Gyeongsan Agricultural Technology Center said, “The direction of government-supplied varieties is shifting from high-yield varieties to high-quality varieties, and we will do our best to discover new varieties.”
