Gurye-gun Protects the Pristine Jirisan and Seomjingang through Carbon Neutrality Partnership

[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yuk Miseok] Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do held the ‘2050 Carbon ZERO Clean Gurye Vision Proclamation Ceremony’ on the 21st, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

The county plans to preserve the pristine natural environment of Jirisan Mountain and the Seomjin River to become the lungs of Korea that absorb carbon beyond just achieving carbon neutrality.

The proclamation ceremony was attended by Kim Sun-ho, the county governor, Yoo Si-moon, chairman of the Gurye County Council, Lee Hyun-chang, member of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Assembly, county council members, heads of related organizations, and village chiefs, totaling about 50 people.

The county declared its 2050 carbon neutrality vision and promoted a special lecture explaining climate outlooks and carbon neutrality policies.

Following this, a card ceremony performance was held to pledge commitment to low-carbon practice actions.

To reduce greenhouse gases, the county declared policy visions for carbon neutrality including ▲Preservation of pristine natural clean Gurye ▲Clean mobility Gurye ▲Safe clean agriculture and livestock Gurye ▲Clean forest green life city Gurye ▲Greenhouse gas reduction practice campaigns.

The county stated that Jirisan Mountain and the Seomjin River, abundant in Gurye, are pure and pristine resources by themselves, and plans to preserve them well without violating the laws of nature that flow clear water and emit clean air, to accompany the carbon zero initiative.

Additionally, the strategy includes expanding solar new renewable energy and urban gas supply, promoting electric and hydrogen vehicle distribution and infrastructure construction, expanding low-carbon eco-friendly agriculture and livestock, planting over 100,000 trees and creating urban forests, and encouraging each citizen to reduce one ton of carbon emissions, aiming to become a future carbon-neutral city.

The county plans to establish the ‘2050 Gurye-gun Carbon Neutrality Plan’ to prepare a detailed strategic implementation system.

This year, it announced investments of 800 million KRW for vehicle emission reduction projects, 1.1 billion KRW for eco-friendly vehicle distribution projects, 2.2 billion KRW for new renewable energy distribution support projects, and 4.4 billion KRW for forest care and forest creation.

Kim Sun-ho, governor of Gurye-gun, said, “For Gurye, a city where pristine nature coexists centered on Jirisan Mountain and the Seomjin River, I ask all citizens to actively participate in low-carbon practice movements in their daily lives,” adding, “We will preserve the pristine natural environment and make Gurye-gun a carbon-absorbing city.”

Meanwhile, the county participated in the government’s 2050 carbon neutrality joint declaration in May last year and joined the Carbon Neutral Local Government Practice Alliance last month.
