"Targeting the Public Market" KT and Tilon Jointly Develop DaaS Platform

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] KT is collaborating with Tilon to strengthen its presence in the Desktop as a Service (DaaS) market for public services.

KT (CEO Koo Hyun-mo) announced on the 21st that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with cloud virtualization company Tilon for the "joint development of a DaaS business model targeting public institutions and activation of the business."

Market analysis firm Gartner projected that the global DaaS market size in 2022 would grow by 30% compared to the previous year, reaching 3.0279 trillion KRW (2.54 billion USD). Domestically, the government is leading the DaaS market through initiatives such as the 'Digital Government Innovation Promotion Plan.'

Based on this MOU, the two companies will promote ▲ expansion of public network separation projects based on virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) ▲ exchange of technical capabilities for developing DaaS business models ▲ promotion and joint marketing to activate the DaaS business.

KT and Tilon aim to jointly develop a DaaS platform and become the first in Korea to obtain security certification led by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). Public institutions in Korea are required to use DaaS certified by KISA. Once the certified platform is registered in the Digital Service Utilization Support System of the National Information Society Agency (NIA), public institutions can quickly adopt the DaaS platform without undergoing complicated bidding procedures.

KT and Tilon have maintained their alliance since the early days of the public cloud market. The two companies jointly developed the first multi-tenancy internet network separation DaaS platform among domestic cloud service providers (CSPs). In a multi-tenancy platform, multiple customers can use the same environment simultaneously.

In the public market, the traditional method of physically separating work network PCs and internet network PCs, requiring one person to use two PCs, is being improved to a logical network separation method allowing one person to use one PC.

According to the 'Digital Government Innovation Promotion Plan' announced in October 2019, leading ministries such as the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Science and ICT planned to apply internet network separation DaaS in 2021 and expand it to other ministries. In November 2020, the Ministry of Science and ICT and KISA finalized a DaaS security certification system consisting of 110 items.

Kim Joo-sung, head of KT’s cloud business, said, "KT and Tilon have the largest number of VDI deployment cases among domestic VDI solution providers," adding, "Through strong collaboration with Tilon, we will lead the rapidly growing public network separation market."
