Signing of MOU for Cooperation on 1 Million Ton Scale Seawater Desalination Project in Egypt

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyeyoung] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction announced on the 21st that it is making a full-scale entry into the seawater desalination business in Egypt.

To this end, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation on a reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination project with Hassan Allam, a major Egyptian development and construction company, and Almar Water Solutions, a Saudi-Spanish joint venture.

The MOU was signed at the 'Korea-Egypt Future and Green Business Round Table' held yesterday in Cairo, Egypt. The signing ceremony was attended by Amir Allam, CEO of Hassan Allam, Jeon Hayong, head of EPC sales at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and other officials.

Through this agreement, the companies agreed to establish a comprehensive cooperative relationship to promote a seawater desalination project producing a total of 1 million tons of freshwater per day in the port city of Ismailia, located at the midpoint of the Suez Canal in Egypt. The 1 million tons is equivalent to the amount that the entire population of Busan (approximately 3.35 million people) can use in one day.

According to GWI, a UK-based water research institute, Egypt plans to order seawater desalination projects with a capacity of 2.8 million tons per day by 2025. It is expected to supply 6.4 million tons of water per day through seawater desalination plants by 2050.

Park Inwon, head of the Plant EPC BG at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, said, "Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been recognized for its technology by clients through the construction of about 30 seawater desalination plants mainly in the Middle East over the past 40 years," adding, "We will strive to ensure that the seawater desalination business cooperation between Korea and Egypt yields results through this agreement."
