218 New COVID-19 Cases in Gyeongnam... Aftermath of Cluster Infections Continues

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Ju-cheol In] Gyeongsangnam-do announced that as of 5 p.m. on the 20th, the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the province increased by 218.


By region, there were 97 cases in Changwon, 40 in Gimhae, 24 in Jinju, 12 in Yangsan, 11 in Geoje, 9 each in Miryang and Changnyeong, 5 each in Tongyeong and Haman, 2 in Goseong, and 1 each in Sacheon, Hadong, Sancheong, and Geochang.


Among the total confirmed cases, 113 were infected through contact with confirmed cases within the province, including family members, coworkers, and acquaintances. Seven cases tested positive after contact with confirmed cases from other regions, including the Seoul metropolitan area.


Among the confirmed cases in Changwon, 3 are related to the ‘entertainment establishments located in Changwon,’ bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 68. One confirmed case in Changwon is classified as a new cluster infection related to ‘Company VI located in Changwon.’


On the 18th, one employee was initially confirmed positive, and during mass testing on the 19th, 15 employees and 1 family member were additionally confirmed. On the 20th, one more employee tested positive, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases related to this cluster to 18.


Additionally, one confirmed case in Changwon and six confirmed cases in Changnyeong are classified as a new cluster infection related to a ‘business site located in Changnyeong.’


On the 12th, one employee was initially confirmed positive, followed by one employee and one family member on the 13th, one employee and one family member on the 16th, one employee and one family member on the 17th, eight employees and one family member on the 18th, ten employees and three family members on the 19th, and seven additional cases on the 20th, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases related to this cluster to 36.


Among the confirmed cases in Gimhae, 4 are newly classified as related to the ‘Daycare Center IV located in Gimhae,’ with a cumulative total of 29 confirmed cases. After one staff member was initially confirmed positive on the 16th, mass testing was conducted, resulting in 19 confirmed cases on the 17th, including 4 staff members, 9 children, and 6 family members. On the 18th, 4 family members tested positive; on the 19th, 1 child and 2 family members; and on the 20th, 1 family member and 1 acquaintance were additionally confirmed. So far, 109 people have been tested, with 29 positive, 75 negative, and 5 tests pending.


The Gimhae city quarantine authorities immediately dispatched a response team to the facility to conduct an in-depth epidemiological investigation and completed quarantine measures. All facility staff were placed under isolation. The facility voluntarily closed until the 24th.


Eleven confirmed cases in Jinju are related to the ‘indoor sports facility located in Jinju,’ with a cumulative total of 109 confirmed cases.


Eight confirmed cases in Miryang are related to the ‘daycare center located in Miryang,’ with a cumulative total of 35 confirmed cases.


Among the confirmed cases in Haman, 2 are related to the ‘business site located in Haman,’ with a cumulative total of 20 confirmed cases.


The number of confirmed cases of the Omicron variant increased by 40 from the previous day as of 6 p.m. on the 19th, bringing the cumulative total to 296.


Accordingly, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the province increased to 23,288 (1,634 hospitalized, 21,545 discharged, 109 deceased).
