[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] A mother and son who had been separated since childhood and had not met for 44 years were dramatically reunited with the help of the police.
According to Yeonggwang Police Station on the 20th, Mr. Yoo went missing after leaving home at the age of 8. His family reported him as a missing child and searched thoroughly through nearby protective facilities to find him, but ultimately could not locate him.
The heartbreaking story of the two began in 1978.
At that time, due to difficult family circumstances, the son, Mr. Yoo, was entrusted to his aunt's house.
However, Mr. Yoo went missing after leaving home at the age of 8, and afterward, his mother, Ms. Lee, found it impossible to find her son because his name and age had been changed while he was raised in a protective facility.
After moving from Seoul to Yeonggwang, the mother, with a desperate wish to at least confirm whether he was alive, registered her DNA at the Jeonnam Yeonggwang Police Station last November. Fortunately, Mr. Yoo’s genetic data was still on file, allowing them to find him.
Upon meeting her son, the mother said, “I am so happy to have found my son; it feels like a dream. I felt a great sense of guilt for losing him, but I am relieved to be reunited like this,” expressing her gratitude to the police who helped.
Chief Kang Ki-hyun of the police station said, “I am truly happy that the mother and son, who had not known each other’s fate for a long time, could be dramatically reunited,” and added, “Our police will continue to do our best to ensure that missing persons can return to their families as soon as possible through close cooperation with related organizations.”
