The Jogyesa Temple in Turmoil Amid Voices For and Against the National Monk Conference

On the 20th, the area in front of Jogyesa Temple in Jongno-gu, Seoul, was chaotic with voices both for and against the National Monks' Assembly. Civic groups such as the Candlelight Citizens' Coalition held a press conference across from Jogyesa Temple condemning the National Monks' Assembly, demanding that "the Buddhist community stop political interference through collective actions like the National Monks' Assembly." The Candlelight Citizens' Coalition pointed out that "amid ongoing social distancing due to COVID-19, this is a blatant political move to interfere in elections and manipulate politics, even at the risk of public health."

The Jogye Order has defined the disparaging remarks about cultural heritage admission fees by Democratic Party lawmaker Jeong Cheong-rae and the government's support for the Catholic Christmas carol campaign as religious bias and distortion of Buddhism. They plan to proceed with the National Monks' Assembly at 2 p.m. on the 21st in the front yard of the Daeungjeon Hall at Jogyesa Temple. It is expected that about 5,000 monks may attend the assembly. Here are collected photos from the scene.
