NIS Forms 'Security Crime Information Council' to Transfer Counterintelligence Investigation Authority

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced on the 20th that it has decided to establish an intergovernmental Security Crime Information Council, including the NIS, police, Korea Coast Guard, and Military Security Support Command, to ensure the smooth transfer of counterintelligence investigative authority scheduled for January 2024.

The NIS announced the legislative notice of the "Security Crime Information Work Regulations," which centers on this content, on the 20th.

This bill establishes the Security Crime Information Council to build an information-sharing system and promote cooperation, and it deliberates and resolves policy matters such as ▲necessary items for information sharing ▲establishment and implementation of work plans ▲necessary matters for dispatch and training of personnel. If needed, regional Security Crime Information Councils can be formed to address concerns about regional security gaps.

Additionally, the bill stipulates the establishment of a Security Crime Information Cooperation Center under the Director of the NIS to handle the collection, analysis, and sharing of security crime-related information, allowing NIS staff and dispatched personnel from related agencies to work together.

This bill is scheduled to be promulgated after the legislative notice period, review by the Office of Legislation, approval by the State Council, and presidential sanction.
