[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Director Bong Joon-ho, who made history at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards with "Parasite," is set to present a sci-fi film with Hollywood actor Robert Pattinson.

On the 19th (local time), the American media outlet Variety reported that director Bong Joon-ho will direct a sci-fi film adapted from Edward Ashton’s unpublished novel "Mickey7."

Edward Ashton gifted director Bong the manuscript of "Mickey7," scheduled for publication in February, last year. Captivated by the novel, Bong immediately began adapting it into a film. The novel is expected to be published in the first quarter.

"Mickey7" tells the story of Mickey, a clone sent to colonize Niflheim, a world made of ice. Robert Pattinson, known for the films "Twilight" and "Tenet," is a strong candidate to play the lead role of Mickey.

The production company Offscreen, producer Choi Doo-ho who worked on "Okja" (2017), and Brad Pitt’s Plan B are participating in the production, with Warner Bros. handling worldwide distribution.

Director Bong Joon-ho made history with "Parasite." In 2019, he won the Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival, the first Korean film to do so, and at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, he won four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, gaining worldwide attention.

Director Bong recently announced plans to direct two films, one American and one Korean, and is also preparing a Korean-language animation themed on deep-sea creatures and humans.
