[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Former professor Jin Jung-kwon of Dongyang University expressed disbelief over broadcaster Kim Eo-jun's claim that artificial intelligence (AI) could mimic the voice of Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea's presidential candidate, suggesting a 'manipulation theory.'
On the 19th, Jin said on CBS Radio's 'One Match' program, "He is basically saying not to trust the recordings circulating now because they might be AI-generated."
Jin explained, "Simply put, that’s Kim’s style. For example, when the Me Too movement seemed about to break out, he claimed 'they are orchestrating something.' So when the actual Me Too incidents occurred, supporters perceived them as conspiracy theories from the opposition. He has played such tricks many times, but this time it seems to have gone too far. He believes this recording has considerable impact."
Jin also said, "There are three main reasons why candidate Lee is stuck in the polling box range. One is that the regime change narrative remains alive; second is the Daejang-dong scandal; and third is this abusive language recording. Actually, this recording was dead, but it was revived because of the recording of Kim Geon-hee, spouse of Yoon Seok-youl, the People Power Party’s presidential candidate."
He continued, "When people hear 'Kim Geon-hee recording,' they immediately pay attention. It’s already reflected in the approval ratings, but it was revived again, and it will keep circulating."

Earlier that day, Kim claimed on his TBS radio show 'Kim Eo-jun’s News Factory' that he received reports about fake abusive language videos mimicking candidate Lee’s voice being distributed. Kim said, "I received specific reports that a deepfake audio file of candidate Lee cursing directly was produced somewhere and delivered to somewhere, and it is scheduled to be distributed soon." Deepfake refers to fake videos or images created using AI technology that are difficult to distinguish from real ones.
In response, Kim Jae-won, a Supreme Council member of the People Power Party who appeared on the broadcast, pointed out, "The level of abusive language candidate Lee uses is the most atrocious possible in Korean. No matter how much deep learning training is done, AI would be unable to mimic candidate Lee’s abusive language." Kim Eo-jun rebutted, "That’s not true. I have heard simulations while broadcasting with AI experts for a long time, and they can even simulate crying and anger."
