[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hye-young] LG Electronics announced on the 20th that it will launch 'LG Medipain,' a home-use medical device for chronic pain relief. LG Electronics plans to actively expand its business into the professional medical device market by unveiling LG Medipain two years after releasing a medical device for hair loss treatment.
LG Medipain, a new-concept pain relief device, has received medical device certification from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as a Class 2 transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device.
LG Medipain applies the 'Painless Signal Therapy' technology. While existing low-frequency devices relieve muscle pain through high-intensity stimulation, this product delivers electrical signals similar to painless biological signals to the brain, allowing the brain to receive painless information instead of pain. This technology was recognized as a new medical technology with proven safety and efficacy by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2013.
The product consists of a main unit the size of a tissue box and four electrode pads. Users attach the pads around the area where they want pain relief, such as the neck, shoulders, or knees, following the images and voice guidance displayed on the 7-inch LCD screen in the center of the main unit, and use it for 30 minutes a day for 10 days at the desired intensity.
Users can compare the numerical changes in pain before and after using Medipain, making it easy to relieve chronic pain at home. The dedicated case allows for convenient storage by holding the main unit and accessories together.
Chronic pain generally refers to pain lasting more than three months. Unlike acute pain from burns or surgery, its cause is often unclear, and it is known to be influenced by psychological factors such as stress, requiring continuous treatment and consistent management.
According to the Korean Pain Society, it is estimated that about 2.5 million people suffer from chronic pain in Korea, which corresponds to about one in ten adults. Especially, over 80% of the elderly population aged 65 and older are estimated to have chronic pain, and the number of patients having difficulty visiting hospitals regularly has increased due to COVID-19.
From today, LG Electronics will sell Medipain at more than 20 LG Best Shops nationwide and B2B (business-to-business) medical device specialty stores, with a shipment price of 1.99 million KRW.
Oh Sang-jun, head of LG Electronics' Home Beauty Business, said, "Through continuous research and development, we will enhance our expertise in the home medical device field and ensure that customers can use our products with confidence."
