President Moon Visits Riyadh Metro Construction Site... Encourages Korean Workers

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 19th (local time), President Moon Jae-in visited the construction site of the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia, partially constructed by Samsung C&T, to encourage the workers.

The Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia is the country's first metro construction site and Riyadh's first public transportation system. Among the six lines spanning 168 km within downtown Riyadh, a consortium including Samsung C&T constructed three sections (64 km).

At the 4D1 station concourse of the Riyadh Metro, President Moon received a briefing related to the construction site and stated, "I feel proud of our companies participating in high value-added eco-friendly complex transportation projects based on excellent technology, moving away from the past simple construction-focused orders in the Middle East."

He continued, "Our overseas construction companies are participating in key Saudi projects not through low-price bidding competition but with excellent technology and differentiated project management, showing hopeful new directions and possibilities for our overseas construction industry."

President Moon said, "I expect that our country's experience and technology will be actively utilized in mega new city projects such as NEOM and Qiddiya promoted by Saudi Arabia, and that our companies' participation will expand in various plant projects resuming orders due to oil price recovery. At the government level, we plan to continue the momentum of winning orders in Saudi Arabia through close cooperation with the Saudi government and spare no support to ensure our companies can sustain growth and development."

After touring the interior and platforms of the Riyadh Metro station, President Moon encouraged the on-site workers, stating, "The sweat and efforts of our workers amid difficult conditions such as COVID-19 will serve as a catalyst to advance economic cooperation between the two countries to the next level."
