Up to 100㎡ and 1.5 million KRW limit, first-come-first-served installation
Changwon City, Gyeongnam, will implement a cool roof support project this year as well, targeting detached houses vulnerable to summer heat.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Changwon City in Gyeongnam Province is carrying out the “Cool Roof Support Project” to mitigate heatwaves on roofs of single-family houses vulnerable to summer heat again this year.
Cool Roof refers to applying high-reflectance paint on building roofs or rooftops to reduce the heat entering the building.
By minimizing the absorption of solar radiation energy and maximizing heat reflection into the air, it lowers the roof surface and indoor temperatures, saving cooling costs in summer and alleviating the urban heat island effect.
The city reported that when satisfaction was surveyed among 39 project participants last year, 70% responded that “there used to be a stifling heat inside the house during summer, but after the Cool Roof installation, it disappeared, and the indoor temperature felt 2 to 3 degrees lower, so I am satisfied.”
Among the 30% who answered average satisfaction, the rooftop surface temperature of their houses was measured and confirmed to be 15 to 20 degrees lower than before.
The city plans to support 30 households with a maximum of 100㎡ and a limit of 1.5 million KRW, providing 15,000 KRW per square meter for construction costs.
Citizens who wish to participate can request a painting, wet waterproofing, or masonry specialist company within Changwon City, and that company will apply for the subsidy support from the city on their behalf.
Support will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis as applications from companies are received, and any excess area must be covered by the applicant.
For more details, search for “Cool Roof” in the city’s website under City News and Announcements or contact the Climate Change Response Division of the Environmental Policy Department.
Choi Jae-an, Director of the Environmental and Urban Bureau, said, “We hope for much interest and participation in the Cool Roof project, which can reduce electricity use during summer.”
