[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters (Chief Park Geun-oh) announced on the 19th that it will issue a "Moving Season Gas Accident Warning" starting from the 20th, anticipating an increased risk of gas accidents due to carelessness in attaching and detaching gas cylinders during the moving season.
In the past five years, a total of 27 gas accidents (fires) have occurred in Jeju, resulting in 22 casualties and approximately 170 million KRW in property damage.
By month, 29.6% (8 cases) of the accidents occurred during the moving season from December to January last year.
By location, 70% (19 cases) were concentrated in houses and restaurants, which is mainly attributed to insufficient gas facility sealing measures and misinterpretation of valve locking status during the moving season, leading to negligence in safety precautions.
In January 2020, an LP gas explosion fire occurred due to a damaged rubber hose in a multi-family house located in Hoecheon-dong, causing about 7 million KRW in property damage.
In March last year, a fire occurred during gas shut-off at a multi-family house in Yeondong, Jeju City, resulting in approximately 530,000 KRW in damage.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters plans to strengthen publicity by establishing a cooperative system with related organizations to spread safety rules for preventing gas accidents along with issuing the moving season gas accident warning, and to establish a rapid response system in case of accidents.
An official from the Fire Safety Headquarters said, "To prevent gas accidents, when installing or dismantling gas facilities during moves, be sure to consult a professional gas sales store, and always check whether gas is leaking from hose seals, gas cylinder connection hoses, and intermediate valves."
