LG Energy Solution-CATL Tech Showdown in March... 'InterBattery 2022' to be Held

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] LG Energy Solution and China's CATL, who are fiercely competing for the number one market share in batteries, will showcase their battery technology together for the first time. With China's CATL expressing its intention to participate in this year's 'InterBattery,' major battery companies except Japan's Panasonic (3rd place) are expected to demonstrate their capabilities all at once.

The Korea Battery Industry Association announced that it will hold 'InterBattery 2022' for three days from March 17 to 19 at COEX Hall A in Seoul. 'InterBattery' is hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Battery Industry Association and COEX.

Notably, this year's event will attract attention as the world's first participation of the battery manufacturing BIG 4. According to SNE Research, the battery market shares from January to November 2021 are CATL (32.4%, 1st), LG Energy Solution (20.7%, 2nd), SK On (5.9%, 5th), and Samsung SDI (4.6%, 6th).

The industry interprets CATL's move, which had been passive in exhibition participation, as driven by its supply to Hyundai Motor and interest in the Korean energy storage system (ESS) market.

Additionally, companies from battery raw materials to core materials, parts, and equipment such as Korea Zinc, POSCO Chemical, EcoPro BM, L&F, SK Nexilis, Wonjun, Carl Zeiss, Baker Hughes, and Sungil Hightech have confirmed participation. It is expected to be an opportunity to gauge the outlook on the battery supply chain issues and the reused battery market, which have recently become hot topics.
