Prosecutors Deny Arrest Approval, Judging It Not an Urgent Matter
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A man in his 20s who lured an elementary school student to an unmanned motel on Christmas and sexually assaulted her has been booked by the police.
The Women and Youth Crime Investigation Unit of the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency announced on the 18th that they are investigating Mr. A (25) on charges of statutory rape and injury of a minor.
Mr. A, who works as a ski instructor at a ski resort in the province, is accused of taking Ms. B, a sixth-grade elementary school student, to an unmanned motel on December 25 last year, suggesting a transactional meeting and soliciting prostitution, and sexually assaulting Ms. B when she refused.
Upon learning of the incident, the police immediately arrested Mr. A, but the prosecution deemed it not an urgent matter and did not approve the detention, resulting in Mr. A’s release.
At the time, the prosecution did not approve the emergency arrest considering that there was no statement from Ms. B and that Mr. A had gone to the police station himself to actively deny the charges. The police reportedly were advised to apply for an arrest warrant if necessary in the future and to ensure thorough protection measures for the victim.
Meanwhile, a police official stated, "We are conducting a thorough investigation."
