[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) announced that Daesang (CEO Lim Jeong-bae) donated 1,400 “Happy Cheongjeongwon Gift Sets, More Sharing, More Delicious” on the afternoon of the 18th in celebration of the Korean traditional holiday Seollal.

Since participating in the Bodeumnuri Project through the “Hope Sharing Movement” on February 10, 2015, Daesang has actively engaged in sharing activities for neighbors. Every year, it sponsors Cheongjeongwon gift packages and gift sets, and by donating 1,400 gift sets this time (equivalent to 35.28 million KRW), it has supported a total of 357.21 million KRW.

In particular, Daesang has continued its support even after relocating its base from Dongdaemun-gu to Jongno-gu on November 26 last year, to express its unwavering gratitude and love for the residents of Dongdaemun-gu.

At the delivery ceremony, Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu and two officials including Na Gwang-joo, ESG Management Director of Daesang, attended. Mayor Yoo presented a plaque of appreciation to Daesang as a token of gratitude.

This year’s donated gift sets total 1,400, each containing olive oil seaweed, perilla oil seaweed, and canola oil worth approximately 25,200 KRW. All Dongdaemun-gu employees and private partnership organizations plan to deliver the gift sets to their one-on-one matched recipients by the 26th, before the Seollal holiday, carrying hopes for overcoming COVID-19.

Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu said, “Despite the difficulties everyone faces due to COVID-19, I thank CEO Lim Jeong-bae and the staff of Daesang for sending their gratitude and love to the residents of Dongdaemun-gu. Also, as the magpie that left its nest for the Korean traditional holiday Seollal brings hope, I hope all residents have a hopeful and safe Seollal holiday.”

Since December 2011, Dongdaemun-gu has started the “Bodeumnuri” project to care for residents in welfare blind spots who are struggling without legal support. All Dongdaemun-gu employees and private organizations form one-on-one partnerships with low-income families, carefully checking on vulnerable households through monthly phone calls and visits.

Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) signed a business agreement with Geonwoo Edu (CEO Jin Jong-won) on the 18th at the Gwangjin-gu mayor’s office for the “Gwangjin-gu Native Speaker Online English Learning” program.

Geonwoo Edu, established in 2012, is a specialized online English education company with about 250 native English-speaking instructors.

Through the agreement, Gwangjin-gu and Geonwoo Edu established a support system for native speaker online English learning for Gwangjin-gu residents. Elementary, middle, and high school students can receive partial tuition support from the district, and adult learners receive tuition discounts.

The district supports 40,000 KRW of the 60,000 KRW tuition fee for general elementary, middle, and high school students, and fully supports tuition for low-income students. The support covers 150 low-income students and 600 general households, totaling 750 students.

Classes are conducted as real-time interactive online lessons three times a week for 30 minutes, with one native instructor teaching three students, over a two-month course.

Adults can take classes where one native instructor teaches one student at a monthly regular price of 164,000 KRW for 85,000 KRW per month. Affordable learning is also available for adult ESL and adult TESOL courses.

Applications open on February 1 on the Gwangjin-gu online English learning website. For more details, contact the Gwangjin-gu online English learning customer center.

Mayor Kim Seon-gap of Gwangjin-gu said, “I hope this native speaker online English learning program helps improve residents’ language skills and reduces private education costs for students. We will continue to support various educational programs to bridge learning gaps and educational voids caused by COVID-19.”
