The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 18th that it held a meeting with construction safety-related organizations to raise safety awareness at frontline construction sites.
Presided over by Minister Noh Hyung-wook, the meeting was attended by heads of five affiliated organizations including Korea Land and Housing Corporation, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea Rail Network Authority, Incheon International Airport Corporation, and Korea Airports Corporation, as well as leaders of five construction-related associations including the Korea Construction Association, Korea Specialty Contractors Association, Korea Institute of Registered Architects, Korea Engineering Contractors Association, and Korea Housing Association. They discussed inspections and necessary system improvements to ensure safety at construction sites nationwide.
Through this meeting, the attendees agreed that the government, public institutions, and industry must all engage in deep self-reflection and fundamental improvement efforts to prevent the recurrence of backward accidents such as the recent Pyeongtaek logistics warehouse fire and Gwangju apartment collapse.
In particular, Minister Noh emphasized, "For the construction industry to regain public trust, a fundamental principle prioritizing safety over short-term profits and schedule reduction must be established," adding, "Thorough preparation for the enforcement of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and the enactment of the Construction Safety Special Act, currently pending in the National Assembly, are necessary."
The meeting participants also discussed safety inspection plans for their respective construction sites.
According to the nationwide construction site inspection plan established by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, affiliated public institutions will conduct thorough inspections of their respective sites including roads, railways, airports, and housing. For approximately 25,000 private construction sites, each association will actively manage its member companies to ensure that self-inspections led by contractors and supervisors are properly implemented.
Minister Noh urged, "Since the construction industry cannot stand without sound construction and safety management, please work together to deeply root safety as a culture at construction sites and ensure that safety systems function properly on the ground."
