[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A man in his 30s who targeted moving vehicles on roads shared by pedestrians and cars, such as gas station entrances and crosswalks, collided with them and demanded money, was eventually arrested.
Busan Nambu Police Station announced on the 18th that they have arrested and sent Mr. A on charges of deliberately colliding with vehicles proceeding on crosswalks or sidewalks, then claiming insurance money and settlement fees by alleging injury.
According to the police, on October 8th last year at 10:17 a.m., Mr. A collided lightly with the front bumper of a passenger car driven by Mr. B in Nam-gu in front of a gas station crosswalk, then extorted about 1.4 million won in settlement money from the insurance company. He is suspected of repeating this method 11 times, embezzling a total of about 34 million won in insurance and settlement money.
After Mr. A reported being involved in traffic accidents repeatedly at crosswalks or sidewalks three times from June to October last year, the police suspected insurance fraud, launched an investigation, confirmed eight other offenses, and arrested him.
Mr. A targeted vehicles that were slowing down but not stopping at pedestrian signals on relatively quiet roads’ crosswalks.
The Traffic Accident Investigation Division of Nambu Police Station explained, “After the accidents, Mr. A made drivers admit to the crosswalk accidents, recorded conversations, and if some drivers did not comply, he called 112, exploiting the drivers’ anxious psychology.”
He boldly committed crimes by also collecting personal criminal settlement money from some drivers. In fact, some drivers at the time of the accidents were grateful that Mr. A did not report the crosswalk accidents to the police and even gave him a ride to the hospital.
It was revealed that Mr. A joined insurance policies that pay out in case of serious traffic accidents to claim more insurance money, deliberately targeting vehicles passing crosswalks, and obtained an additional 15 million won in insurance money.
A police official advised that if insurance fraud is suspected, people should report it to the police or keep and submit dashcam footage to the police, as it helps prove the facts, encouraging proactive measures.
