[3rd Report] JCS: "North Korea Launches Projectile into East Sea"

[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] North Korea launched an unidentified projectile into the East Sea on the 17th.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced in a text message sent to the press corps around 8:56 a.m. that North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the East Sea. The military authorities promptly notify the media if a ballistic missile is detected. The Joint Chiefs are currently analyzing specifications such as range, altitude, and speed.

North Korea's launch on this day marks the fourth military provocation since the first of the new year on the 5th. It came just three days after firing two short-range ballistic missiles from a train on the 14th. Previously, on the 5th and 11th, North Korea launched ballistic missiles it claimed were ‘hypersonic missiles’ in the Jagang Province area, and on the 14th, it fired two short-range ballistic missiles called the ‘North Korean version of Iskander’ (KN-23) from a train on the railway in the Uiju area of North Pyongan Province.

In particular, despite the Biden administration in the U.S. unveiling its first sanctions against North Korea in response to the two ‘hypersonic’ launches earlier this year, North Korea has continued a series of military provocations at three-day intervals, seemingly to flaunt its defiance.
