Nation's First Public Video Space 'Seocho Digital Booth' Expanded to 6 Locations

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu is expanding the operation of its public video conference spaces, called ‘Seocho Digital Booths,’ to six locations starting this month.

Noting the recent surge in demand for non-face-to-face services such as online classes, remote work, and online interviews, the district installed the first ‘Seocho Digital Booth’ in a local government library, Yangjae Library, in June last year.

The newly added Seocho Digital Booth locations include Bangbae Senior Welfare Center (located in Bangbae 2-dong), Seocho Women and Family Plaza Seocho Center (Seocho 4-dong), Jamwon Center (Jamwon-dong), Bangbae District Women and Family Facility (Bangbae 3-dong), and Bangbae Open Culture Center (Bangbae 4-dong).

The expansion of the digital booths was driven by the high response to the Seocho Digital Booth installed in Yangjae Library last year, with many residents requesting installations in other locations. In fact, from June to December last year, a total of 224 people used the digital booth at Yangjae Library, averaging 38 users per month. In October last year, the district conducted a demand survey and considered resident accessibility to install booths in four areas (Seocho, Banpo, Bangbae, Yangjae).

The most notable feature of the Seocho Digital Booth is that it provides a small space measuring 1.5m wide × 1.2m deep × 2.1m high, where individuals can quietly and comfortably use digital devices for free without inconvenience. The booth exterior is equipped with soundproofing and privacy protection film on the outer walls to prevent personal privacy exposure.

Inside the booth, various digital devices such as a monitor, webcam (with speaker and microphone), and smartphone mirroring cables are installed, allowing users to connect their laptops or smartphones brought in advance. Users can conduct video conferences as well as ▲video interviews ▲online lecture attendance ▲lecture delivery ▲YouTube broadcasting, among other activities.

The district has also paid attention to COVID-19 prevention measures. Hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes are provided inside the digital booths, and ventilation fans automatically operate when a user enters. Additionally, facility managers regularly ventilate and disinfect the booths after use.

Furthermore, to prevent device malfunctions, the district has established an integrated management system. A general manager remotely monitors all six booths from an office via a main system. If system errors or other issues arise, maintenance personnel are dispatched promptly.

Residents wishing to use the Seocho Digital Booth can make on-site reservations or apply through the district office website. Usage time is limited to a maximum of two hours per person to prevent monopolization.

Going forward, the district plans to actively review locations with high demand and easy access and install four additional digital booths by the end of the year.

Cheon Jeong-wook, Acting Mayor of Seocho-gu, stated, “We will continue to actively discover smart administrative services that residents can feel in their daily lives in this non-face-to-face era, such as the Seocho Digital Booth.”
