Among those selected as POSCO Heroes this time, Kim Do-jung discovered a woman holding an unconscious child while waiting at a traffic light near Songpa Intersection in Seoul on November 27 last year. He performed CPR himself to revive the child’s consciousness and, when the ambulance was slow to arrive in the cold weather, he put the child in his own car and rushed to the hospital.

Mr. Kim said, “Seeing the woman holding the child and crying, I instinctively thought ‘this is a serious situation’ and ran out of the car.” After arriving at the hospital, the child’s mother wanted to express her gratitude, but he firmly declined and left the scene.

Song Dae-woong, who was driving a city bus in Gyeongju, witnessed a car collision at an intersection near Geoncheon IC on December 29 last year. When the accident vehicle caught fire, he stopped the bus operation and used the fire extinguisher and spare extinguisher on the bus to put out the fire.

Thanks to his quick initial response, he rescued a woman in her 20s who was in the accident vehicle and prevented the fire from spreading further. Mr. Song said, “I just did what any citizen should do,” and added, “I’m glad it didn’t lead to greater damage.”

University student Lee Gyu-sang spotted a vehicle suspected of drunk driving while driving on the highway near Sangju on December 30 last year. After reporting it to the police, he pursued the vehicle and contributed to the police’s arrest of a severely intoxicated driver whose license was revoked.

As the drunk driving vehicle exited the highway onto a national road, Mr. Lee kept informing the police of its location and chased it. He said, “Even though I chased it for over 40 minutes, I hoped the drunk driver wouldn’t cause an accident,” and added, “I’m relieved that I was able to stop the drunk driver before entering the city and prevent greater damage.”

The POSCO Heroes Fellowship is a program that supports heroes who sacrificed themselves for the nation and social justice, or their children, so they can continue their studies stably. It actively discovers public officials and ordinary citizens who serve as social role models, raises social interest in righteous actions, and aims to create a just society where members help each other even in difficult situations. Established in 2019, it has selected a total of 49 POSCO Heroes to date.
