[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A man in his 20s who sexually assaulted a teenage girl and subjected her to cruel acts such as burning her body with a cigarette ember was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
On the 16th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Pohang Branch of Daegu District Court (Presiding Judge Sunhyang Kwon) announced that A (23), who was indicted for violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse, the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, and special injury charges, was sentenced to three years in prison with a five-year suspension. Additionally, probation was ordered along with 80 hours of sexual violence treatment lectures, and a five-year employment restriction at institutions related to children and youth as well as welfare facilities for the disabled.
A was accused of drinking with a teenage female he met online at his home on January 21 of last year, sexually assaulting her, and taking nude photos and videos with his phone camera. After learning of the victim’s pregnancy, about a month later, he met her again in a parking lot and, because he was displeased with her behavior, kicked her abdomen and put cigarette ashes with burning embers into her mouth.
During this process, not only A but also B (18) and C (17), who knew A, joined in, burning the back of the victim’s hand and repeatedly slapping her cheeks. The court transferred B and C, who were charged with special injury, to the Juvenile Division of Daegu Family Court.
The court stated regarding A, “The crime is grave considering the victim was a young minor, the target, circumstances, method, and outcome of the crime. However, the sentence takes into account his remorse and the fact that he suffers from a psychiatric disorder.”
Regarding B and C, the court explained, “Although they conspired with A to commit the crime and bear heavy responsibility considering the target and method of the crime, since their personalities are still developing and they show remorse, it is deemed appropriate to focus on rehabilitation. Therefore, they are recognized as subjects for protective measures and are transferred to the Family Court.”
