Average Daily Confirmed Cases of 3,854 Over the Past Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] The spread of COVID-19, including the new Omicron variant, is increasing again. As of 6 p.m. on the 15th, more than 3,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide.
According to health authorities and local government heads including Seoul City, as of 6 p.m. on this day, 3,213 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide tested positive for COVID-19. This is 109 more than the 3,104 cases recorded at the same time the previous day.
Typically, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases decreases over the weekend, but this time it is increasing. The number of new confirmed cases is expected to rise further by midnight when the tally closes.
Among the confirmed cases on this day, 2,069 (64.4%) were in the metropolitan area, and 1,144 (35.6%) were in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 1,153, Seoul 722, Incheon 194, Gwangju 178, Daegu 154, Busan 145, Chungnam 111, Gyeongbuk 108, Jeonnam 95, Gyeongnam 94, Jeonbuk 90, Gangwon 69, Daejeon 40, Chungbuk 30, Sejong 13, Ulsan 9, and Jeju 8.
The fourth wave, which began in July last year, has continued for seven months. Over the week from the 9th, the daily new confirmed cases were 3,371 → 3,005 → 3,094 → 4,383 → 4,165 → 4,539 → 4,423, averaging about 3,854 new cases per day.
