[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] University students from Daejeon were massively infected with COVID-19 after going on an MT (Membership Training) trip to Boryeong, Chungnam.

According to Daejeon City on the 14th, out of 30 students from a university in Daejeon who went on an MT trip to Boryeong, Chungnam from the 9th to the 11th, 21 tested positive for COVID-19. Among them, one was infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Except for one student, the other 20 were breakthrough infections, having completed their second vaccine dose before November last year.

The quarantine authorities consider the university MT as a private gathering and a violation of quarantine rules, and are reviewing plans to file charges.

Daejeon City stated, "Boryeong City, where the MT took place, will take measures regarding the confirmed cases. However, we will also check whether the students held private gatherings such as after-parties after returning to Daejeon and take appropriate actions accordingly."

A university official said, "We were not aware in advance that the students were going on an MT. It was not an event organized by the school but was arranged among the students themselves."

The quarantine authorities have isolated 20 confirmed cases in a living treatment center and are testing them for Omicron infection. The results are expected around the 15th.

Meanwhile, the number of Omicron variant infections in Daejeon increased by 32 in one day, bringing the total to 128. Since the first Omicron case in Daejeon was confirmed on the 23rd of last month, 11 cases were accumulated by the 31st, and with 32 new cases yesterday, the total has risen by 117 this year to reach 128.
