Ministry of Unification: "North Korea Must Respond to Peace Efforts"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Ministry of Unification stated on the 14th that it "repeatedly urges North Korea to respond positively to the government's efforts to create peace through dialogue" in response to North Korea's backlash against the additional US sanctions on North Korea.

At a regular briefing on the same day, Deputy Spokesperson Cha Deok-cheol said in response to related questions, "The government will closely monitor North Korea's additional reactions and related trends."

On the 12th (local time), the US imposed sanctions in response to North Korea's consecutive ballistic missile test launches. North Korea issued a statement on the same day, saying, "If the US insists on taking such a confrontational stance, we cannot help but respond more strongly and clearly."

Regarding the need to ease sanctions on North Korea related to humanitarian cooperation, Deputy Spokesperson Cha said, "There is a broad consensus in the international community, including the US and the UN, that sanctions should not hinder humanitarian cooperation for the North Korean people," and added, "Based on this consensus, the government will continue efforts to find reasonable and effective ways to apply sanctions in the field of humanitarian cooperation."
