Establishment of University Student Tutoring and Expansion of Supplementary Classes
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education will implement a university student tutoring program to recover learning loss starting this year. Supplementary subject classes through on-site teachers will also be expanded.
On the 13th, the Ministry of Education and the Korea Association of Superintendents of Education held the "3rd Education Recovery Support Committee Meeting" online to review the progress of education recovery and the 2022 education recovery promotion plan.
At the meeting, they discussed the direction for stabilizing education recovery, phased implementation plans to eliminate educational gaps, and support measures for vulnerable groups and alternative education due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ministry of Education and metropolitan and provincial offices of education will invest 9.4152 trillion KRW this year for education recovery and customized support for vulnerable groups.
Starting this year, as a policy to address educational deficits and restore normal school life, the supplementary subject program through on-site teachers will be expanded. Last year, 8,324 schools nationwide conducted supplementary subject programs. This year, 320 billion KRW in special grants and 885.5 billion KRW from metropolitan and provincial offices of education will be invested.
The "Basic Academic Skills Three-Stage Safety Net," which includes cooperative teaching leading schools (500 schools), Doodream Schools (6,000 schools), and Comprehensive Learning Clinic Centers (193 centers), will also be strengthened.
A university student tutoring program utilizing education and teacher training college students will be newly established this year to provide learning supplementation and counseling to students who wish to participate. 105 billion KRW in national funds will be invested this year.
Special grants of 20.5 billion KRW will be provided for school-level programs focusing on forming peer relationships, fostering social skills, and physical activities, and 21.2 billion KRW in special grants will support counseling, treatment costs, and visiting medical services for psychological support.
From the second half of the year, a mid- to long-term implementation plan for stabilizing the second phase of education recovery and eliminating educational gaps will be prepared.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye said, "The Ministry of Education will do its best to overcome the COVID-19 crisis, fully restore normal school life, and achieve education recovery to overcome our students' learning deficits."
