On the 13th, a customer is purchasing a swimsuit at the Lotte Department Store main branch in Jung-gu, Seoul.
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for swimsuits has been increasing as "hokangseu" (hotel staycations) have become popular among the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z).
According to Lotte Department Store on the 13th, swimsuit sales had been declining until the first half of last year but turned to an upward trend from the second half of last year. Swimsuit sales increased by 15% from July to December last year, and rose by 198% last month. From the 1st to the 11th of this month, swimsuit sales also more than tripled compared to the same period last year.
Lotte Department Store is showcasing various "hokangseu wear" such as swimsuits, beachwear, and aqua shoes during the New Year sale period. On Lotte ON, an "Indoor Swimsuit Collection Event" is being held until the 16th, offering up to 15% discounts.
A Lotte Department Store official said, "The demand for swimsuits is increasing again, centered on the MZ generation enjoying hokangseu," and added, "As hokangseu blurs the distinction between peak and off-peak seasons and is steadily used throughout the year, swimsuit sales are expected to perform better this year than last year."
